List of School-Related Accomplishments

 

2002-2003 The New School of Northern Virginia (part-time)

  • I built a cabinet to store the school laptops with the help of student Dan Rosenberg.
  • I sponsored a two-week-long Video Game Programming computer camp which set a New School record for summer camp attendees (18 campers in one two-week session)

 

2003-2004 The New School of Northern Virginia

  • I organized new student orientation (I did this for two subsequent years). As far as I know I am the inventor of the giant circle activity.
  • I organized trips to Dave and Busters, Comedy Sportz, and Laser Tag
  • I started the Frisbee team, the first organized sport in the 17 year history of the school
  • l organized the New School’s first ever Earth Day (three years in a row)
  • I revitalized a dormant recycling program
  • I organized a faculty talent show skit with 10 participants
  • I organized the Snow Ball dance
  • I helped a student plan the ski trip, which had been dormant for two years
  • I organized 10 students to go to the Colleges That Change Lives college fair
  • I Organized Field Day (three years in a row)
  • I brought robotics equipment to the New School
  • I have made three presentations to the NCISR conference over the years: teaching current events, community building, and blogs in the classroom.

 

2004-2005 The New School of Northern Virginia

  • I planned two 90 minute long community building activities for ongoing orientation (two years in a row)
  • I designed a booth for Greenfestival a collaborative effort of over 25 students parents and teachers at which we handed out over 800 brochures over two days. This is probably the accomplishment about which I am the most proud.
  • I created The New School t-shirt
  • I created the first ever Karaoke night
  • I helped to organize three outings for the Lost Dog and Cat volunteer event
  • I created two Open House signs
  • I helped make Tony Orange happen
  • I helped to start the Beau moments tradition (the telling of positive stories at staff meeting)
  • I helped organize the Alcohol Awareness assembly
  • I do day to day maintenance in the computer lab
  • I started the tradition of student leadership of Morning Meeting
  • I helped organize the Helped with the Homeless walk (two years in a row)
  • I became Frisbee League co-commissioner (two years in a row) and I co-manage the website
  • I created and planned Career Day (two years in a row)
  • I provied website and video support for Michael’s morning module class

 

2005-2006 The New School of Northern Virginia

  • I provided leadership training to the chairperson of the meeting
  • I am the first New School teacher to consistently cc: students during correspondence with parents
  • I nominated John Potter for the Washington Post Principal of the year
  • I organized the 90 minute Wednesday Afternoon community time
  • I was instrumental in inviting students to attend the beginning of year staff meetings for the first time in New School history
  • I facilitated the use socially responsible funds for the first time in school history
  • I created The New School Blog and distributed it to students, parents, and teachers
  • I arranged for the first ever school soccer games against Howard Gardner School
  • I helped organize the Katrina Concert which raised over $1500 and 20 boxes of supplies for Bay Saint Louis Elementary
  • I organized the first every New School film festival
  • I organized the first ever LAN parties at school
  • I advised the principal to use Craig’s List to hire a math teacher and the assistant business manager
  • The frisbee team started to win games. Two years ago we were winless; we didn't even wear shirts during the games. Last year we wore shirts, but we only had 5 dedicated players and we were again winless. This year we had 10 dedicated players and our regular season record was 4-1.

 

2006-2007 The Lab School or Washington

  • Enhanced the 8th grade Computer Lab class by developing advanced curriculum for the following software tools: Garage Band, Microsoft Office, Flash animation, HTML website creation, iMovie film creation, and Sketchup computer aided design
  • Created the first editions of the student newspaper in the history of the junior high that were written and layed out entirely by students. The articles were written in Google Docs and layed out in Print Shop
  • Sponsored two Friday evening LAN party fundraisers, raising over $400
  • Enhanced the efficiency of the parent and faculty email distribution lists
  • Co-taught technology classes for American University interns
  • Collaborated with two other teachers to revive the Senior Arts Project
  • Collobarated with another teacher to create what the high school direcor called the best yearbook we've ever had
  • Collaborated with anther teacher to create a pilot program to test the efficacy of Google Docs in writing classes
  • Taught seven teacher in-service classes on the following topics: Word, Powerpoint, Internet Research, and Google Docs
  • Volunteered at Gala and Auction
  • Co-chaperoned the annual junior high Teton Science School trip
  • Founded (another) frisbee team at a school that owns no fields
  • Coordinated a film festival and an animation festival
  • Coordinated the slideshows for the Tetons trip and the final performance
  • Created the junior high memory book with an accompanying DVD
  • Taught two sections of summer film creation class
